Configure Goals

Using a Goals dataset, Auto Insights can perform a variance analysis against your main dataset (for example, Expenses, Revenue, SLA), otherwise known as the "Actuals" dataset.

Requirements for configuring a Goals dataset:

  • Both your Actuals and Goals datasets need to exist as Alteryx One datasets before Goals can be configured.

  • The goals dataset must have at least 1 numerical (measure) column and at least 1 date column.

Uploading Goals

  1. Goals datasets are imported just like any normal dataset, from any of the available options: File Upload or Connection via Alteryx One or Import Data from Alteryx OneImported via Designer Desktop.

  2. Once both the Goals and Actuals datasets exist as Alteryx One datasets, we can proceed to the steps below to configure a Goals dataset.

Configuring Goals

  1. Go to the Data page in Alteryx One.

  2. Select your Actuals dataset.

  3. Go to the Data Insights tab.

  4. Select Settings.

  5. Go to Goals from the left navigation bar and then select Create goal.

  6. Select your goals dataset and select Next to proceed to the next step.

  7. Map columns from your Goals dataset to your Actuals dataset. Take note that a measure and a date column must be mapped to complete the upload process.

    1. If there are any errors during the mapping process, they will be highlighted at the top of the screen, and should be resolved before continuing.

  8. Once you've mapped all the required fields, select Finish to save the mapping. The Goals dataset will be linked to the Actuals dataset and ready for use.

Sharing Goals

A Goals dataset is only visible in Preset Reports or Explore Data Insights by users/groups with whom that dataset has been explicitly shared. Goals datasets can be shared just like any other dataset. To share your Goals dataset:

  1. On the Data page, select the 3-dot menu next to your Goals dataset, and select Share.

  2. The Share Dataset modal displays:

    1. Select the users and/or groups with whom you want to share your Dataset.

    2. Configure the level of access to be granted to these users - Viewer or Editor.

    3. Select Share.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I access settings from the Data Insights tab?

There are 2 reasons why you're not able to access the Datasets 3-dot Menu:

  1. You don't have the necessary role to edit datasets.

  2. You haven't been assigned Editor permissions to this dataset.

If you would like to add Goals to your dataset, please reach out to your Workspace Admin for them to set you up with the right permissions.

What happens if there are changes to the Actuals or Goals datasets?

If there are changes to either the Actuals or Goals datasets, our recommendation is to review the goals mapping to ensure all the relevant columns are mapped correctly, which can be done quickly by revisiting the Goals page fromSettings on the Data Insights tab.

What happens if my Goals dataset is refreshed?

If new data is loaded into the Goals dataset, it will automatically be loaded and used when displaying Actuals vs Goals variances in Preset Missions or Explore Data Insights.
